NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key policy, did not confirm his residency plans right away after his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda voters voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change there, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he added.

Political Debate

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
