What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
