A large-scale search and rescue mission is presently in progress in the Caribbean region for two lost sailboats loaded with aid cargo en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search and Rescue Missions Launched

The Mexican government has sent navy personnel and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine total crew members, as stated by a military release.

The boats had been expected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Aid to the Island

Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through widespread national electricity failures.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy stated.

The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"The group is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Relief Mission

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the island.

That vessel, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Broader International Climate

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the island nation came into effect.

International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from various leaders underscoring the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Reacting to previous proposals, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The Mexican navy stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the vessels and secure the security of the crews.

To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
