The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
