The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the hit series coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Fan Response

It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, why not reference the classics?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
