Revelers have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve. Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Amid Forecasts Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to take place, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland. "An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the weather service. Celebrations Under Clear but Cold Skies Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, meaning extra layers a necessity, said forecasters. In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster. Broad Weather Alerts for Friday Heading into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England. Travel is likely to be affected. The public have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road. Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses. Temperatures Expected to Drop Even More With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are expected to affect the north of the country. Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills. Medical Advisories Released In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C. The health agency stated this meant the weather was expected to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups. The guidance for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
