Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years Old

The world grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in popularizing reggae music across the globe. He passed away at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.

Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat sound and uplifting spirit brought him a large and loyal fanbase.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a performance that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff is among the select few of artists, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
