Fury Surges as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Criticism

Figures from both sides of the political divide and the Hollywood industry are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Social Media Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Developments and Detention

Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bail was established at a significant amount.

A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.

This is a vile and despicable statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Party

Some GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his party to defend the comments.

The Director's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of another political figure.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
