Igor Jesus has now scored 11 goals in every tournament for the club this season.

Match Summary

  • The home side were previously qualified to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in control.
  • Striker nets again with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • James McAtee caps a excellent display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a convincing win against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

Forest had previously guaranteed a berth in the next qualifying round and went into this game with a slim possibility of reaching the top eight, even though they needed other matches to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this confident performance will give the supporters belief that their side can navigate the two-legged play-off to reach the round of sixteen.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the post with a headed effort inside the opening stages for the visitors – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

They opened the scoring in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and added a second shortly after – the striker squeezing a shot in at the far post for his 10th goal of the season.

Jesus' eleventh goal arrived early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the backline and then place a shot past the shot-stopper.

The third strike killed off Ferencvaros' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts scored again when the impressive James McAtee converted a spot-kick after a infringement by the unfortunate Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

Europe's secondary club competition knockout phase play-off lottery is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest might face either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a positive step."

Forest Analysis: Striker Shines as New Signing Watches On

Igor Jesus has been a revelation for Nottingham Forest in Europe this season with six of his 11 goals scored in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the threat of competition for his position in attack could be spurring him on.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week brought in temporarily and he was observing this match from the stands.

This development may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was impressive against the opposition, producing two superb goals and generally being a menace to the visitors' defence with his pace and movement.

The forward was not the only one in catching the eye, with James McAtee turning in his best performance in a Forest jersey since joining from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while the Swiss international also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they switch focus to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they host their London rivals on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a response," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their loyalty or integrity. It is just go and show your quality.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Igor got another two and these are good signs."
