The final installment of the star-studded version of The Traitors was uploaded in error by overseas distributors prior to its planned UK broadcast on Thursday night, according to official sources.

It is understood that the final was viewed by a few hundred subscribers of the online platform the streaming service in Canada; these individuals were able to watch it for a couple of hours before it was taken down.

This episode being uploaded was not considered a mistake by the producing network, and a spokesperson for the corporation urged those who think they have discovered the result of the series to "avoid sharing potential spoilers".

"We kindly ask those who thinks they know the outcome of the celebrity edition to keep whatever they believe they know to themselves," the announcement said.

"Please avoid sharing potential spoilers so that the vast audience who have been closely watching every development of the show can enjoy the finale this night."

This celebrity version is currently the top-rated TV program of the current year, with an average of 12.6 million people across the first four episodes.

Viewers of the show have been waiting to see whether traitors the traitors will win the £100,000 prize for a good cause or whether faithfuls Joe Marler, Nick Mohammed and David Olosuga will be victorious.

A former winner of the third series of the show commented that "no one likes reveals", which are "the thief of joy".

He said they will be settling in to view the final tonight live, with all of his family and "a bucket of popcorn".

Thursday's final episode is extended to 70 minutes on BBC One, with an extended edition of the companion show scheduled to broadcast on the secondary channel following the final.

Presenter Ed Gamble will be joined by the cast and the co-host as they react to the series conclusion.
