Everyday tennis enthusiasts will have the possibility to earn a seven-figure prize when they take on tennis' top professionals - including top-ranked the Spanish champion - in a winner-takes-all point prior to January's Australian Open

Event planners of the Melbourne major have announced the $1 Million Single-Point Tournament, which will match 10 amateur players against elite athletes in a knockout tournament at the Australian Open venue

This Innovative Tournament Functions

Participants must play 'rock, paper, scissors' to establish who serves or receives, and the competitor securing the point will move forward to the next round

The champion of the event will receive a significant cash prize

For comparison, players who advanced to the penultimate round of the primary tournaments in the last edition won A$1.1m

The New York major staged a revamped, standalone mixed doubles tournament in late summer which prompted top singles players to participate, with the victors receiving $1m

The year's first major held its inaugural One Point Slam this year, but the total purse was a smaller amount and it generated little publicity

Andrey Rublev was the sole elite competitor participating, and his run finished when he sent the sole serving chance granted failing to clear the net in his penultimate round

Event Specifics

Planners have not specified precisely how the event will function, but it is expected to follow a similar format to this year's edition

The professionals will be granted to serve once and the non-professionals on two occasions - as is the standard practice in conventional tennis

While it is uncertain how the draw will work, there will be multiple elimination stages and the site will be the primary court rather than the alternative court

The final stages will take place in a nighttime schedule instead of midday timing

Participation Information

Domestic competitors - or international players who have enrolled with the national federation - can enter 'One Point Slam' competitions at their neighborhood facilities

The winners of the local competitions will then go into a random pairing, with one amateur player from every geographic division selected to participate in the 'championship round' in a nighttime event on the specified date

There will also be a qualifying draw in late year which non-professionals, aspiring competitors, well-known figures and athletic celebrities can compete in

It commences on the starting date and the two winners will advance to Wednesday's 'championship match' with the other eight amateurs and elite competitors

"Whether you're an amateur or a pro, the ultimate winner will receive the award. Applications will begin shortly at clubs nationwide"

Competition planners said there were "further celebrities to be revealed shortly", while the event portal mentioned "famous personalities" would be involved
