🔗 Share this article Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons. Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit. A Major Commitment In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters. "My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come." A President's Endorsement The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal. "All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'" A Different Kind of Comedy Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their everyday routines. Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape. “We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.” Future Seasons With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan. The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
