A Gripping Journey: Food Delivery from the West Philippine Sea – A Compelling Journey Through Resupply Routes amid the Regional Tension.

Director Baby Ruth Villarama and her crew travel on a variety of sea craft to record the continuing conflict and its consequences between the Philippine nation and China over authority of the recently named West Philippine Sea. These waters, viewed by nearly everyone apart from China as part of the Philippines' EEZ, has seen increasing infiltration by Chinese maritime forces. While some are fishing boats, most notably maritime militia that have engaged in harassing, collided with, and tried to seize Filipino boats amid the ongoing standoff.

Portions of the film are highly charged, but frequently the conflict unfolds as a diplomatic dance of naval posturing. Officers from the different ships exchange heated speeches over short-wave, peppered with legal jargon, practicing a unique radio diplomacy.

The Mission Behind the Title

The film's title points to the ongoing mission by the Philippine army to transport essentials to tiny outposts in the West Philippine Sea where soldiers hold the line for long, solitary stretches. These specks of land are often just small accumulations of sand in shallow waters, comparable to a football pitch, reachable solely via high-speed inflatable boats.

The voyages are clearly frightening for the cargo of baby goats, which are crammed in with preserved supplies and additional provisions. Footage captures the goats struggling for secure footing as the vessels zoom across the choppy waves.

The Fishermen's Plight

Elsewhere in the documentary communities around the more populated Scarborough Shoal, who lament over reduced harvests caused by the sheer number of Chinese fishing boats in their ancestral fishing areas.

Fascinating Topic, Flawed Presentation

From a technical standpoint, the documentary is slightly weakened by a slightly disjointed narrative approach and a musical score that can feel somewhat melodramatic, amplifying the dramatic moments. Nevertheless, it is ultimately a compelling examination of a geopolitical issue that receives little discussion outside its region.
